Obamabrations at Campuses Across the Country

Today as America watched as the 44th President was sworn into office, colleges across the country stopped to embrace the moment. At DePaul University, Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., President of DePaul, sent out an email to the entire university community to explain the days festivities. Here is a segment.

“Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Please join your friends and colleagues in classrooms and gathering points across campus on the historic morning of Jan. 20 as our nation inaugurates the first African-American President of the United States of America, a man of honor from our own backyard.

We have arranged a CNN feed to be available in all high-tech classrooms and for TVs and monitors in our public spaces to air news coverage of the event and related activities throughout the day. See below for a complete list of locations to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Once-in-a-lifetime? Presidential inaugurations happen every four years.

We asked a student at DePaul if they devoted this much attention to the last inauguration, and he simply said “absolutely not.”

DePaul even created a Facebook group so all could share in the celebration (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=48262131618&ref=share).

… Okay that one was a joke.

But of course DePaul wasn’t the only place that experienced the Obamabrations.

A student at Purdue University sent in a complaint that their Electronic Mass Communications class was being forced to watch the ceremonies.

Oh well. It’s not surprising that all of this occurred.

Good luck to the new President and thanks to George W. Bush for his service.

Let us know what went on at your campus!
