Opinion Piece by Mick Paskiewicz Indiana University is kicking off the year with CultureFest to highlight the diversity at IU. That's great, wonderful. Have your party and enjoy some good ethnic food. However, maybe I'm just a cynic due to our fight to end divisive race based programs on campus or just seeing way too much into this, but this seems like another diversity indoctrination attempt. If that's the case, then I see some irony in their activities for this celebration. As you know, the key focus of diversity at colleges is race or skin color. Well guess who the main speaker is for CultureFest? Blind motivational speaker, Marcus Engel. Come see IU's diversity and hear from the guy who can't see it. I mean that's not to be a shot at him. He has a great, inspiring story. However, this sounds like someone one would have speak at a "Fest" celebrating character and intellectual diversity. 'He appreciates the things one can't see!' I guess I would just assume they'd have someone talk about the importance of diversity and the usual stuff campuses get their jollies from. That's why I may just be cynical. This is probably just a well intentioned event with a good inspirational speaker, not an attempt to indoctrinate students. Enjoy your hummus and soul food Hoosiers. |
